Day 13. A Band Or Musical Artist That Is Important To Me.
November 9, 2011

~Thirty Days of Truth Challenge (

I’m not going to pick my all-time favourite artist, the band Say Anything. Instead, I’m going to write about another of one of my favourite bands The Postal Service. According to my wikipedia sources, they are an American electronic indie pop band. I think that’s pretty apt. They don’t really sound like anyone else. The two members of this band are Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello.

Why do I love this band so much?

Well, as I said, they are really unique, they don’t fit into any one, main stream genre really. It’s all elecentronic-y, but in a more endearing way, it’s not abrasive or brash, like techno can be. I see it as kind of more futureistic-esque. And all their song have romantacised themes, they’re surreal, and yet still gentle. It chills me out.

Favourite song?

Well, I chose most of my favourite songs on lyrics, being the language obsessive that I am. So my favourite song is The District Sleeps Alone Tonight. I mean what a great title, don’t you just fall in love with it from that?! This song is full of so many great lines, I love lyrcists that use imagery properly and effectively! Just as in, “I’m staring as the asphalt wondering what’s buring underneath.” I really could quote the whole song to be honest, but I shall refrain from doing so.

Near the end of the song I love the lyrics, because it is actually a really beautifully written song, they have actually thought about how they wanted it to sound, linguistically as well as musically.

The district sleeps alone tonight after the bars turn out their lights and send the autos swerving into the lonliest evening.”

And a key line that acts as the anaphoric chorus, “I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving.” I like this line because it refelct realisations and clarity but isn’t actually clear at all in what he means. It can be read in a multiple of ways, did she leave him? Is he now seeing her point of view? Or is he now accepting his own reasons for leaving her? Does he now finally fully see it as the ‘right’ thing to do? Who left who? Why? But the point isn’t the know, I just like little rhetoric devices like this (:

Favourite lyric?

In all of their songs, my favourite lyric would have to be in the song Brand New Colony, either

I’ll be the platform shoes, undo what hereditry’s done to you, you won’t have to strain to look into my eyes.

I want to take far from the cynics in this town and kiss you on the mouth, we’ll cut our bodies free from the tethers of this scene, start a brand new colony where everything will change, we’ll give ourselves new names, identities erased.

Oh it’s just so beautiful (‘: go listen to some of their tracks. My top five tracks by them will have to be:

1. The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
2. Brand New Colony
3. This Place is a Prison
4. Recylced Air
5. Clark Gable

All You Are To Me Is Dead Skin

This song is amazing. This band is amazing. Listen and fall in love.

Say Anything – It’s a metaphor, fool.

I’m Right, You’re Wrong, We Both Lose To Win
October 23, 2011

A song that I’ve loved from the moment I first listened to it, I love it every time I listen to it and it never gets old. Though it’s not exactly the kind of song you can keep on repeat and play to death. But a cheeky listen every now again, I love it. It’s by The Rocket Summer, a one-man Christrian rock band. No joke. Goodbye waves and drive ways. It’s what you’d listen to after you’ve had a huge argument with someone that’s really close to you, which is what it’s about.  Just think more people should know and love this song. Warning, it’s a song for a sap, so if you’re really ‘hard’ and ‘G’, don’t bother.

Also, a little while ago I saw a blog post that discussed the question, ‘Would you admit to being wrong, even if you didn’t actually think you were, during an argument just to end the argument?’ And most people were like, hell no if I’m not in the wrong I’m not going to give in. But really, at the end of the day, does it really matter? I mean obviously if it’s over something quite serious then that’s a different story, but, I don’t know, I hate arguments, I don’t mind the casual debate or banter with someone but actual, full blown arguments, I think if in the long run it didn’t matter, I’d be quite quick to back down. Some people just like arguments though. I’ve known people like that, I really don’t understand it at all. They have to be right about everything, have control I guess. Anyway, that’s my ramble over.

Three Songs You Can’t Not Listen To
October 22, 2011

So I did say I’d post a song by The Xx, and I was torn by about four differen tracks but I chose this one because this is probably the most well known at the moment as Birdy has recently done a cover. It’s called Shelter, and I love the line ‘can I make it better with the lights turned on’, because it really plays with the metaphorical idea of light resembling enlightenment, positivity etc, but in a much more literal way. Also, it kind of expresses a raw vulnerability, that idea of bright light, pure exposure, just to ‘make it better’. The language is beautifully simple, which mirrors the music, it’s got that minimilistic vibe going on, but you can listen to it and become completely submerged in it, get lost in it’s little bubble. Give it a listen, if you haven’t heard it already.

My second song is by an American band called Say Anything, my favourite band in the whole wide world. It’s called ‘Into The Night’, it’s got that sexy angry acoustic thing going on. I mean, it’s a song about hurt and yeah maybe it is a bit ’emo’ and depressing, but I think it’s a bit more tongue in cheek, it’s hyperbolic, like the line, ‘the satin sheets are ruby red, like the nails that scarred my back’.  I mean, the overly cliche imagery with the use of ‘ruby red’, just pure hatred and anger all over, yet also holding connotation of the lust and passion that they shared, the passion that the girl is now having with her new fella. And the the act of scarring his back, reflecting the way she has scarred his life, left her impression, caused him pain etc. It’s sensual, it’s got heart and it’s a damn good listen.

Thirdly, another awesome song, that most people should already know, by the good old Kooks, ‘See The World’. Now if any guy came up to me, and said, ‘do you wan to see the world a different kind of way?’ And he promised me he could show me, and well I would be completely swept off of my feet. Who wouldn’t be? It’s like in that film, 500 Days of Summer, when the guy is sitting on that bench with the girl, Summer, and he explains why it is his favourite spot of the city, because he is an architect, and he explain to her, he shows her how to see the world in a much more beautiful way. And how he says, if I could I would make people notice, and she asks how, and he draws it on her arm. I sound like such a sap, I know, but I’m a sucker for romance and art and shit like that. I like it when I can see something and then someone says something that makes you look at it a completely different way. I like things that are personal to people, and to me that’s what thing song is about. Obviously it’s about more than just that, but that aspect is beautiful, I want to sail away and never come back, well yeah come back, but come back a completely different person because you’ve seen things differently, because you’ve seen the world, maybe not literally the world, but yeah I’ll stop rambling. Listen to this sweet ass song.
